Gucci is an Italian luxury brand of fashion and leather goods. It was founded by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Tuscany, in 1921.
Early History:
Guccio Gucci left Italy and moved to Paris and London in 1898. In London, he worked as a hotel boy at “The Savoy Hotel”. Living in different cities, he gained a deep insight into the city’s sophistication and culture that helped him flourish his business. When he returned to Florence, he helped his dad in making saddles and saddlebags but soon demand for horses’ products fall which resulted in Gucci making different accessories.
Foundation Of Gucci:
He founded ‘Gucci’ as a family business and successfully combined the sophistication he had witnessed abroad with the craftsmanship of Italy. His brand became famous soon, and people from all over the world came to Florence to purchase items from him. The brand kept experimenting with different materials like hemp, linen, and jute. His most notable innovation was burnishing cane to create the handle of the Bamboo Bag, which was inspired by a saddle’s shape.
Expansion:
He soon expanded his business to Rome and involved his sons in it too. In 1953, Guccio died and his son Rodolfo took over his business and expanded it to different cities of World. The company soon became a leading brand due to its new and unique designs; many artists specifically request them to make some most popular selling designs just for them.
Fully Public Company:
In 1981 Gucci presented its first-ever runway show in Florence. The following year with the business in financial issues, it became a public limited company. With this, leadership passed to Rodolfo’s son, Maurizio Gucci. Domenico De Sole was appointed CEO of the company in 1995, transforming the company into a fully public company.
The current CEO is Marco Bizzarri. He is an Italian businessman and has served as CEO of the company since 2015. He appointed some new faces as his workers under different positions, which led him to have different creative ideas and designs. Brand’s sale increases a lot after his appointment. Gucci sales soared 42% in 2017 and 33% in 2018 with a rebound in demand from Chinese consumers. The current net worth of Gucci is more than $15 billion.
